Past Events

This page contains details of previous Friends of the Pentlands events.

During 2011 we clocked up over 6,000 volunteer hours,
enhancing, conserving and protecting the Pentlands. In addition to maintaining
the Harlaw Wildlife garden, litter picking and managing a wildflower meadow at
Bavelaw we held 38 work days. These included pathworks, installing bird and bat
boxes, tree planting and helping to install a new biodiversity trail at Harlaw.

Our last walk of 2010 was a short circular from Swanston.
We started with bacon rolls at Swanston, always popular, and enjoyed tales of
Henry Cockburn at Bonaly and RLS at Swanston Cottage.

2012 started with our usual ‘Winter Warmer Walks’ which
both ended up at the Harlaw Visitor Centre where 30 walkers congregated for
mulled wine and mince pies – a good start to the year.
In February Peter Wright, the author of Ribbon of
Wilderness, gave a most interesting talk about his book and his walking
experiences in Fairmilehead Parish Church.

Circular walks were held in March and May of 5 miles and
eight miles respectively and, following the success of last year’s event, a two
day Open Access Event was held later in May for people with disabilities,
including children.

Badger watches are held every summer and are very popular.
